Douglas Cemetery – Archibald Knox Tour - 8th July, 2025

Archibald Knox (1864 to 1933) was an extraordinary artist and designer who was born in the Isle of Man and spent much of his life here. He studied and taught at the Douglas School of Art and worked to design beautiful jewellery and metal work for Liberty's of London. He spent some time in Surrey where he worked as an art teacher. His pupils so valued his work that when he left they saved his designs from a waste paper basket and went on to form the Knox Guild of Design and Craft. Despite the fact that his name does not appear on the stunning artefacts he designed for Liberty's of London, his work is now widely recognised and lauded for its beauty and quality.

We'll start our walk at the main entrance to the Cemetery on Glencrutchery Road and from there we will view the 8 beautiful gravestones he designed for this place and their fascinating inscriptions. Seven of the gravestones are dated between 1914 (for John Miller Nicholson's death in 1913) and 1930, and the one for Richard Lace is dated 1945. Some show signs of weathering and others are in poor condition, but now restorations are taking place to restore some of them to their former glory.

As we explore the site we'll learn more about Knox's life and works and his legacy for art lovers everywhere as inspired by nature and the beauty of the Island.
