Join Manx Registered Tour Guides for an out of town walk from the Cronkbourne Village, Tromode and walking up a short hill to the Braddan Cemetery

Archibald Knox (1864 to 1933) was an extraordinary artist and designer who was born in the Isle of Man and spent much of his life here. He studied and taught at the Douglas School of Art and worked to design beautiful jewellery and metal work for Liberty’s of London. He spent some time in Surrey where he worked as an art teacher. His pupils so valued his work that when he left they saved his designs from a waste paper basket and went on to form the Knox Guild of Design and Craft. Despite the fact that his name does not appear on the stunning artefacts he designed for Liberty’s his work is now widely recognised and lauded for its beauty and quality.
We’ll start our walk at the place where Knox was born and his family worked in the industrial village of Cronkbourne. We’ll take in the factory site where his father worked and the school room and chapel close by. Then we’ll stroll up a short hill to Braddan Cemetery where we’ll view the 12 beautiful grave stones he designed for this place and their fascinating inscriptions. He designed grave stones in this cemetery over a period of 37 years and they are varied in style, structure and stone/rock composition. Some show signs of weathering and others are remarkably fresh.
As we explore the sites we’ll learn more about Knox’s life and works and his legacy for art lovers everywhere as inspired by nature and the beauty of the Island.
Note: Sturdy shoes required. This tour might not be suitable for those with wheelchairs or walking aids. Waterproofs are recommended.
The walks will be provided by a Manx Registered Blue Badge Guide. To arrange a private tour please contact Jacqueline Yates, jacquelineyates@icloud.com
